《The Four Tenets》 Foundational Studies for the Five Great Classical Texts
【四部宗義】五大論前行課程
The Four Philosophical Schools is an intermediate-level course in Tibetan Buddhism that examines the four major Indian Buddhist traditions: Vaibhashika, Sautrantika, Cittamatra, and Madhyamaka. This foundational study helps practitioners discern their own understanding and progressively realize the ultimate view of dependent origination and emptiness, providing essential preparation for the Five Great Treatises.
Vaibhashika (有部宗)
The Great Exposition School emphasizes the analysis of phenomena into ultimate particles and moments, establishing the foundation for understanding Buddhist Abhidharma philosophy.
Sautrantika (經部宗)
The Sutra School advances beyond Vaibhashika by asserting that external objects are known through inference, refining the understanding of perception and cognition.
Cittamatra (唯識宗)
The Mind-Only School introduces the profound view that all phenomena arise from consciousness alone, bridging the path toward ultimate emptiness.
Madhyamaka (中觀宗)
The Middle Way School presents the ultimate view of emptiness free from all extremes, representing the pinnacle of Buddhist philosophical understanding.
